The Modern Shag is Having A(nother?) Moment

Davines styling product aerosol how to shag hair

Not since Jennifer Aniston brought back the Rachel, has the heavily layered bang cut been having such a moment. Choppy, with lots of texture, today’s shag is super flattering on everyone who tries it. Whether their tresses are long or short, curly and straight-haired girls everywhere are rocking this cut.

We talked to Sal Misseri, owner of Reverie Salon and Kazien Education in Chicago, to get his take on the modern shag- and what to ask your stylist for if you’re thinking of trying out the haircut-du-jor.

Misseri says we’re seeing a nineties takeover in fashion as of late, and this has inspired today’s updated shag. He says the modern version is a chic, grunge homage to the decade. The modern shag is customizable, says Misseri, almost anyone can wear bangs and layers, as long as they’re balanced with their face shape and hairline. Misseri calls the shag one of the most versatile wash and wear styles. Just blast your wet or dry roots withDavines This is a Dry Texturizer, tousle and go.

If you’re thinking of getting the cut, Misseri says it’s important that your stylist consider your face shape and hair growth pattern before chopping into your hair- you want the layers to grow out seamlessly. He suggests asking your stylist to use a razor to free up movement and really bring the cut to life.

This season’s it-girl cut is soft and pretty, low-maintenance and effortlessly cool. With choppy long layers, feathered ends and bangs, the modern shag is the face-framing perfect cut for summer.
