Flattering Hairstyles for Frizzy Hair

When it comes to fighting frizz, the struggle is real. Frizz can turn your smooth strands into a hot mess of hair in mere minutes. Frizzy hair can be hard to tame. And styling frizzy hair can be equally as challenging. Frizzy hair happens when the hair is lacking moisture. When your hair is dry, the cuticle is disrupted. The hair cuticle is made up of what looks like little shingles. These shingles should ideally lie flat, but they open up when damaged or exposed to moisture. This cuticle damage is what’s known as frizz.

Frizz can occur as a result of the following:

  • Humidity in the air
  • Using products with sulfates
  • Using products with alcohol
  • Washing your hair in super hot water
  • Towel-drying your hair
  • Over-styling with hot tools
  • Over-brushing
  • Touching your hair too much

Davines side braid tutorial how to frizzy hair

Flattering Hairstyles for Frizzy Hair

These DIY hairstyles will keep your frizzy hair looking chic, no matter your hair type or texture. In addition to these styles, any one of the easy overnight hairstyles we’ve talked about previously will tame your frizz just as well!

Messy Side Braid

Braids continue to be hot season after season, so rocking this hairstyle keeps you current while helping you keep your frizz under control.

  1. If you have straight hair, start by misting it liberally with sea salt beach hair spray. This creates a grip to help the braid hold. If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, you can skip this step.
  2. Create a deep part on one side and flip all your hair over one shoulder.
  3. Leaving out any bangs or shorter layers around your face, braid all your hair and secure it at the end with a hair tie.
  4. Loosen up your braid by tugging at the sides and spritz with more sea salt spray to complete the look.

Boho Updo

This wispy updo is low-key and romantic and incredibly easy to master. Even better, no heat-styling required.

  1. Let your hair air-dry and then run a curl-defining cream through your locks. Gather your hair into a ponytail halfway between the nape of your neck and the crown of your head.
  2. Wind the ponytail around the base of the hair tie, forming a bun.
  3. Use three to four bobby pins to secure the bun in place before spritzing it with hair spray.
  4.  Rough up the hair at your hairline to create little flyaways.

 Sky High Ponytail

A mega high pony is one of the easiest hairstyles to dress up or down. Pair it with a red lip for night on the town, or some comfy sweats to hang in at home. Either way, this frizz-friendly style only takes about three minutes.

  1. Gather your strands into a ponytail at the crown of your head and secure with a hair tie.
  2. Stick two or three bobby pins in vertically on the underside of the ponytail to keep it lifted.
  3. If your hair is curly, keep your curls soft and bouncy by running a curl-defining cream through your ends.

Half-Bun

Half-buns work on every hair texture and length, making this a must-have hairstyle for anyone in their fight against frizz

  1. Gather the hair above your ears into a high ponytail at the crown of your head. Keep it messy. The messier the better.
  2. Twist the ponytail around itself and then coil it toward the base until you have your bun.
  3. Use a few bobby pins to secure it to your head and pin down any unruly pieces of hair.

Slick Updo

This is the perfect hairstyle to keep your frizz at bay on a hot day when you want all that hair up and off of your shoulders.

  1. Start by brushing out your hair for a smoother texture.
  2. Brush your hair up into a high ponytail and secure with a hair tie.
  3. Divide the pony in half and twist the two sections into a thick, haphazard twist.
  4. Use bobby pins to secure the bun to your head and adjust the shape and size.
  5. Smooth down any flyaways with styling gel.Mist all over with an anti frizz oil for mega shine.

Low Bun With Braids

This style works especially well for those with natural or curly hair looking to tame their frizz.

  1. Start with braids. For an in-depth how-to, see our previous post How to Braid Your Own Hair
  2. Pull your braids into a low bun, leaving a few out before securing.
  3. Wrap the left-out braids around the base of your messy bun.
  4. Lock in your look with a couple of bobby pins.

Accessorize with a Headband

Headbands are a timeless accessory and one of the easiest ways to disguise an unruly head of frizzy hair.

  1. Let your hair air-dry before prepping it with a curl-defining cream.
  2. Choose a headband.
  3. Pop it on over your strands and let your piece-y strands fall where they may.

French Twist

Despite what it looks like, it doesn't get much easier than a french twist. This hairstyle is perfect for taming frizz on second (or third or fourth!) day hair.

  1. Apply a dry shampoo throughout the hair. Concentrate at the roots to maximize volume.
  2. Rake your strands back into a mid-height ponytail, stuffing it into a French twist.
  3. Secure your twist with three large hairpins. One at the top, middle, and base of the twist.
  4. Use your fingers to deconstruct your style, pulling out flyaways at the nape of your neck and around your hairline.
  5. Finish with a spritz of medium hold hair spray.

Slicked-Back

This slick, modern hairstyle looks super cool paired with curly hair and naturally textured hair. Plus, it couldn't be easier to pull off.

  1. Let your hair dry and then grab a high-quality boar bristle brush.
  2. Work a hair smoother through your strands and brush them back to smooth and slick back curly hair to about your ears.
  3. Let your natural hair do it’s thing from there down.

Fishtail Braid

This intentionally messy braid helps you control your wavy hair, tame frizz, and look totally on-trend all at the same time.

  1. Spritz your strands generously with a texturizing spray for fine hair
  2. Part your hair to the side.
  3. Gather all of your hair on one side into a low ponytail.
  4. Divide your ponytail into two sections.
  5. Pick up a thin section of hair from the outside of the first section and add it to the inside of the second section.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you reach the end of your hair.
  7. Secure the end of your fishtail braid with a hair tie.
  8. Cut off the hair tie at the top of your braid to loosen it up and finish the hairstyle.

Tips for Fighting Frizz

These frizz-fighting hair hacks will help you keep your strands shiny and soft.

  • Co-wash instead of using shampoo. Co-washing is the act of washing your hair solely with a conditioner. Many shampoos are formulated with harsh ingredients that can strip natural oils and moisture from the strands of your hair, leaving them dry, frizzy, and more prone to breakage.
  • Use a hair mask weekly. Doing a deep-conditioning hair treatment at least once a week will help fill the gaps in your hair shaft. These gaps contribute to frizz. For a deeper dose of moisture, try applying a hydrating hair mask to dry hair. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it out of your hair.
  • Ditch your hair towel. Your hair is at its most vulnerable state when it’s wet. If you’re using the wrong towel, you can make or break (quite literally) your hair. Cotton towels create friction with your hair, leading to frizz and hair breakage. Instead opt for a microfiber towel.
  • Tame frizz with a toothbrush. Instead of blasting the flyaways around your hairline directly with hairspray, be strategic. Spritz a clean toothbrush with hairspray first, then brush it over your hairline or part to keep your wispy hairs under control.
  • Hold down your frizz with accessories. Hair serums aren't always strong enough for smoothing stubborn flyaways. If your frizz can’t be tamed with a product alone, use a few clips or bobby pins to keep them in place.
  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase. Just like how your cotton hair towel can be contributing to your frizz, so can your cotton pillowcase. If you’re dealing with frizz, it’s time to switch to a silk pillowcase. Sleeping on silk helps maintain your hair's natural oils, so you wake up frizz-free.
  • Get regular haircuts. Getting your hair cut regularly reduces your chances of getting split ends. These broken ends make your hair more likely to break higher up, and cause frizz. Getting regular haircuts will help to keep your hair healthy, shiny, and strong.

Fighting frizz can be a challenge, but armed with the right styles, tips, and products you’ll be seeing silky soft strands in no time!
