Five Tips For Protecting Your Hair In Cold Weather

With every new season comes the necessary preparations — for most of us, the first thing on the to-do list is a wardrobe change. Much like your shorts and bathing suits get shoved into the back of your closet at the end of the summer, your haircare routine should see a similar strategic swap once the temperatures start dropping.

If you've been putting in the work to take care of your hair for the first half of the year, don't let it go to waste once a chilly breeze blows in. Just keep these easy cold weather haircare tips in mind, and even the worst winter storm won't stop you from looking your best (appropriate headwear permitting...)

1. Remember To Moisturize!

It's no surprise that our skin usually gets drier during the colder months, and less moisture in the air can also mean your hair suffers the same fate. Make sure you're restoring any lost moisture by swapping extra hydrating shampoos and conditioners into your beauty routine. The water, vitamins and mineral salts in MOMO help to replenish lost hydration, while the nourishing roucou oil in OI is packed with beta-carotene and antioxidants to protect your hair from the elements.

2. Try Dry-Styling

We've covered the importance of keeping your hair moisturized in the cold, but guess what else can be an instant hydration drainer? Heat styling. Consider skipping the hot tools this time of year, since they can drain valuable moisture from your strands, which is then made worse with the cold temperatures. Nourishing leave-in products like OI All In One Milk and This is an Invisible Serum will help your hair air dry to a controlled, frizz-free finish. And for those with curls and waves, here's an extra styling tip: Vogue recommends using the LOVE/curl hair revitalizer to dry-style your curls and keep them looking fresh all day long, even in harsh weather.

3. Bundle Up With Hats and Scarves

Before heading outside this winter, your new "keys, wallet, phone" mantra should be "hat, scarf, bundle up." That's because the easiest way to keep your hair guarded against the elements is with a warm knit hat or silk scarf. This Bustle article explains the added benefit of layering these two elements, since the combination "helps to protect your hair from damage by the hat rubbing against your hair, and [it] also cuts down on the static."

4. Mix In A Hair Mask

We're strong believers in the fact that hair masks should be a regular part of any beauty routine, but even more so during the colder months. When asked about her preferred hair mask to protect dry hair, Linda de Zeeuw  (a stylist at Rob Peetoom salon in Brooklyn) had a clear favorite: "I love OI Hair Butter, give yourself a hair treatment using this beautiful product and it will smell amazing all day long."

5. Trims and Salon Treatments

End the year with a salon visit: keep your hair looking healthy by scheduling regular trims, and treat your strands to additional salon-exclusive treatments. Getting a customized regimen recommended by your stylist can help diagnose any additional hair concerns, guaranteeing beautiful hair all throughout the holiday season.

We hope these cold weather haircare tips will leave you with happy and healthy hair, no matter how far the temperature drops. And if you have any additional recommendations that you swear by, let us know in the comments!
