Roucou Oil: The Hair Oil To Beat All Hair Oils

These days, it seems brand new haircare ingredients pop up by the minute. But no matter how many new ones hit the beauty world, we couldn't resist looking into an ingredient that gives you longer, stronger locks that are insanely vibrant and glossy, with softer ends and a healthier scalp. This super ingredient makes hair easier to detangle, fights frizz grays and static, and has an SPF to boot. If roucou oil isn’t already a part of your everyday hair regimen, it’s time to revamp your routine. Read on for the roucou scoop!

Roucou oil comes from the fruit of the achiote, an evergreen shrub native to the Amazon rainforest, sometimes called the lipstick tree because of its vibrant pink flowers and red fruit. Also known as annatto and bixa, roucou oil is harvested from the seeds of this heart-shaped fruit. Roucou oil is one hundred times richer in beta-carotene than carrots, which means lots of vitamin A for a healthy scalp and strong strands.

Roucou oil stimulates the production of melanin, which is responsible for your hair’s color, keeping grays away and frizz at bay. It also contains ellagic acid, which neutralizes free radicals and has antioxidant properties that protect against UV radiation, while stimulating hair growth.

It amazingly rebuilds damaged hair and protects strands from the effects of harsh elements like pollution and weather. Roucou oil slows down the effects of hair aging, hydrates and detangles for smooth healthy hair. It even has astringent properties, making it an ideal treatment for dry or oily scalps, or ones dealing with dandruff or eczema.

Roucou oil is the key ingredient in OI Hair Butter, the most recent addition to the OI family of haircare products. Recently featured in Allure’s "All the New Hair-Care Products You Need to Know About in August,OI Hair Butter provides extra nourishment for all hair types and textures, making hair manageable, silky and soft, while fighting frizz and adding shine. As with all products in the collection, OI Hair Butter has the signature OI aroma: musky and floral notes of amber and rice, aromatic and balsamic undertones, and a citrus accent.

If you have fine hair, rub a small amount of OI Hair Butter in your hands and apply it to your dry hair before shampooing. Leave it on for five to ten minutes, rinse and shampoo. For medium to thick hair, apply to your hair damp post-shampoo, and leave it on for five to ten minutes. Comb through and rinse thoroughly.

If your hair is in need of added nourishment, apply OI Hair Butter both before and after shampooing, following the instructions above.
