You've Probably Been Washing Your Hands Wrong — Here's the Right Way to Do It

We’ve discussed the proper technique for washing your hair the right way, but what about your hands? You probably think you know what you’re doing. Turn the water on, put your hands under, soap up, rub together — piece of cake...or is it? According to a new study, people tend to wash their hands incorrectly 97% of the time — a mistake that can lead to things like the common cold, flu or more serious infections like meningitis. So what exactly are we doing wrong when we wash our hands? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about washing your hands the right way.

How long should you wash your hands for?

According to the above study, we’re all getting it wrong when it comes to how long we spend scrubbing our hands. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend scrubbing vigorously for at least 20 seconds, getting not just your palms, but the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Then rinse for another 10 seconds.

How often should you wash your hands?

While the frequency of washes per day will vary for each person, it’s important to wash your hands several times a day, especially during key times when you’re likely to get and spread germs. This includes before preparing or eating food, after using the bathroom or when hands are visibly dirty.

Can hand sanitizer substitute for soap and water?

Yes and no. Hand sanitizers are a convenient alternative when you’re not near a sink and can’t wash your hands. But while hand sanitizers will help to kill many bacteria and viruses, they won’t remove stubborn dirt or harmful chemicals. And the CDC notes that hand sanitizers don’t kill all types of germs—like the flu and some parasites.

How can you keep your hands as clean as possible throughout the day?

Ultimately your hands are going to get dirty. What’s important to remember is that frequent hand washing with a delicate daily hand soap and water is one of the best ways to stop germs from spreading and from getting sick.
